Meet Matthew, our Graphic Designer , he is very tall.

Matthew King

Matt works on everything design related including branding, print design and web design. With over 5 years of experience in graphic designer, Matt was previously an in-house designer at an agency and has been a graphic designer with HeX since 2017. Matt is driven and determined, keeps fit and active and unwinds in the gym after a busy day. He admires self driven people who don’t gloat too much.

Tell us about yourself and how you got to where you are now:

I’m a graphic designer with over five years’ experience and I’ve worked for HeX for a year or so now. I started off designing in college where I took a general art and design course. After developing an interest in design, I took this onto higher education where I studied Graphic Design at Derby University. I have been hired by numerous agencies and businesses to do graphic design, which has  lead to me being sat where I am now in the HeX office.

Personally, I love sport, gym, football and keeping active in any way I can. I’m also a bit of a book worm – I love reading self-improvement and business related books as well as great fiction books such as Harry Potter (the first series of books I read), but you can’t beat Lord of the Rings! I’m also fond of a good TV series, Spartacus, Dexter and Stranger Things are some of my favourites.

What does your average day consist of?

After struggling to get up in a morning, I either travel to the office or work from the comfort of home. I design anything that needs designing which can be a whole host of things from promotional adverts to websites to client business cards.  Then I like nothing better than to wind-down at the gym which is massive for me as I can break that pattern of thought and open my mind.

Who do you admire?

There’s no one I want to base my life on – I aspire to take different traits from different people. Sports wise, I think David Beckham is a great man to follow, he does loads of charity work, he’s great at what he does but also a fantastic family man. Business wise, I look up to people who have built their business from the ground up, from hard work and graft.

What is something few people know about you?

I pride myself on my design skills, of course, but I think something that people don’t know about is my discipline and determination. At school I could have been a lot more driven, but when I left I realised I had under performed and that spurred me onward to become a very driven person.

What toppings would you choose on a pizza?

Everything meat. No veg. When you’ve got a pizza, there’s no cop out: bacon, meatballs, sausage, chicken, pepperoni and not those thin stone baked ones…it’s deep pan all the way!

What are your top three pet peeves?

My number one pet peeve in business is lack of drive, especially if it’s someone I’m working with. Second one would be cutting corners, if I work on a job, I expect it to be done thoroughly, people who I’ve worked with previously have tended to scrimp on quality and save time.

From a personal point of view, it’s attention seeking. There’s a fine line between this and self-promotion but when people can’t help talking about themselves, I normally tend to shut off and not tolerate it.

If you could be anywhere, where would you be?

Argentina. A friend of mine went travelling there and the culture looks amazing and so does the weather! They also love their steak out there – which is a big draw! They like their wine too which I’m not too fond of – but I wouldn’t be against taking some wine-tasting lessons. I could also take some Tango lessons to be honest and learn how to dance! Everything about it, Argentina is definitely on the bucket list.

What would your personal motto be?

I don’t normally throw this in people’s faces – but mine is ‘there’s always a way’ which I always tell myself. When I’ve got a mental block, or I’m faced with a challenge, there is always a way. I’ve always found a way – with everything. It’s always been a personal and private one – but not so private anymore!
